Basic Outdoor Skills
Experiential Outdoor Learning for Schools
Program Overview
Basic Outdoor Skills is a structured experiential outdoor learning program designed to equip students with foundational competencies for safe, responsible, and ethical engagement in outdoor environments.
The program integrates technical outdoor skills, risk management awareness, teamwork, and environmental stewardship into a cohesive learning journey. It emphasizes applied learning in controlled field settings, ensuring both educational depth and safety standards.
Learning Modules
The Learning Modules in the Basic Outdoor Skills Program are designed as an integrated competency pathway rather than isolated activity sessions. Each module builds upon the previous one, progressively developing students’ technical capability, risk awareness, decision-making skills, and environmental responsibility.
Learning Outcomes
Through the integration of technical skills and ecological awareness, students move beyond “outdoor survival” and develop transferable competencies relevant to academic and life contexts.
Students will develop:
- Self-reliance and independence
- Leadership and teamwork
- Foundational risk literacy
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Resilience and adaptability
- Social and environmental responsibility
The program supports competency-based education frameworks and character development models commonly adopted by international schools, providing meaningful experiential learning beyond the classroom.
Navigation & Orienteering
Students learn fundamental land navigation principles, including map symbols, contour interpretation, scale comprehension, grid referencing, and compass use for determining direction and azimuth.
Focus: Spatial awareness and field-based decision-making
Competencies Developed:
- Topographic interpretation and terrain analysis
- Independent positioning and direction finding
- Basic route planning and movement strategy
- Risk-aware and efficiency-based decision-making
Learning Value: Enhances precision, analytical thinking, spatial reasoning, and field confidence.
First Aid Awareness
Students are introduced to foundational outdoor first aid principles, including scene safety assessment, recognition of common outdoor injuries, and initial response procedures prior to advanced medical support.
Focus: Safety awareness and initial emergency response
Competencies Developed:
- Scene safety awareness
- Primary assessment principles
- Initial emergency response
- Communication under pressure
Learning Value: Builds responsibility for personal and team safety while strengthening composure in high-pressure situations.
Environmental Stewardship
The program integrates principles from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, adapted to Indonesia’s ecological and socio-cultural context. Students learn that technical outdoor skills must be practiced alongside ethical responsibility toward natural ecosystems.
Focus: Environmental ethics and low-impact practices
Competencies Developed:
- Low-impact outdoor practices
- Personal and group waste management
- Awareness of local flora and fauna
- Reflection on human impact on ecosystems
Learning Value: Cultivates a stewardship mindset — positioning students as guardians of the environment rather than mere users of natural spaces.
Campcraft & Shelter Building
Students are introduced to safe campsite selection, environmental impact assessment, and basic shelter construction within a supervised and controlled simulation environment.
Focus: Self-reliance and campsite management
Competencies Developed:
- Site assessment (safety, drainage, exposure, environmental impact)
- Team collaboration in structure building
- Efficient and responsible tool use
- Adaptation to weather and environmental conditions
Learning Value:
Develops planning skills, collaborative problem-solving, adaptability, and environmental responsibility.
